'The Manny Diaries' by Kilt Kilpatrick is one of the most emotionally satisfying books I've read in a long time. His characters are unique, outrageous, funny and endearing. His descriptions are interesting and informative, just enough to 'be in the moment' and not feel as if you were taking the grand tour including superfluous details and never ending explanations.I'm in love with Evan--charming, witty, naïve and irresistible. His humorous running dialogue with himself had me laughing throughout the book, i.e., the manner in which he portrayed his job search. Anyone looking for employment, can't relate to this scenario? Trini, Evan's best friend, while unconventional, genuinely loves Evan like a brother. With her support, sometimes welcomed, sometimes not, Evan slowly moves toward an honest life. Everyone needs a friend like Trini. Monette, reminded me of my oldest daughter, who was also quite precocious. Sometimes, as with Monette, it was hard to remember that she was just a little girl. Evan's bond with Monette was phenomenal, instinctively fulfilling her needs far and beyond what was necessary. Courtney, Monette's mother was a wonderful combination of energy, caring, intelligence and warmth. Even at her worst, I empathized with her position and hurt right along with her. Liam was a perfect match for Evan. Their love affair started out like a perfect fairy tale. Unfortunately, there were obstacles to overcome before they could live happily ever after. The agony Evan felt during this process was so moving that it had me in tears.
'The Manny Diaries' is sexy, romantic, funny and honest with myriad of emotions which caused me to laugh, cry and cheer. If you prefer a serious, erotic, raw story, 'The Manny Diaries' may not be your cup of tea. But if you are like me and love romance, humor, compassion and just plain good authorship, you need to read this book.

I had previously read a couple of this author's short stories, so I went into this book with very high expectations. I found the first forty or fifty pages to move slowly, although I found the back-story to be relevant and useful.
With that said, I must say that I finished the remainder of the novel in one sitting. I also must say--and I do not use this word lightly, as I can be quite the snob about what I read--that the last 3/4 of The Manny Diaries is brilliant. The scene progressions are lovely, the characters are fun, and the twists are sometimes surprisingly numerous, but always rewarding. I did find Evan's tantrum at the end of the story to be a little excessive, but overall I loved the character and I loved what Kilpatrick did with the story--it is a fun twist on the coming of age, the coming into one's own, and the coming out of the closet, with great teasers and satisfying bedroom antics.
I highly recommend this work, and I look forward to more of Kilpatrick's books.
I don't read a lot of m/m fiction, but I've read all of this author's short stories and love his writing. His stories display a wide range of styles and his first novel, The Manny Diaries, continues to show a versatile talent that just seems to keep getting better. The story of a young artist recently come out of the closet and looking for true love (and a good job) is funny and touching. The author obviously has affection for all his characters, even the ones who aren't necessarily sympathetic. This really helped me invest my energy into caring what happens to all of them. I love the relationship between the protagonist, Evan, and his eight year old charge, Monette (known as 'Monster) as much as I did the developing love between Evan and Liam. The details of Evan's art are fascinating and rich; a trip to Mexico is written with such lush detail you feel like you're there with the characters... and the ending will satisfy anyone looking for that HEA! Highly recommended, whether you're into m/m romance or not!
